The three major cash crops, tobacco, tea and sugar are a vital part of Malawi’s economy, together accounting for over 80% of the country’s exports in 1999. Tobacco is by far the most important crop, accounting for over 66% of total exports, Malawi being the tenth largest producer in the world. The tobacco industry employs over 40% of the working population, and over 7 million of Malawi’s population are dependent on tobacco.
